Highlights: Views, sore glutes

Length: 2 - 4 hours

Where: 15 minute drive from the CBD, or bus

What to take: Active wear (windproof in a strong southerly), camera, water

If you're after a solid workout, Hawkins Hill offers a variety of tracks with some serious inclines. The views aren't bad either, so be sure to bring your phone (as if you wouldn't).

Getting there: From Brooklyn, drive down Happy Valley Road to the Landfill Road turnoff and find a park on the side of the road; or, take the 29, 4 or 1 bus and get off near Landfill Road. The entrance is to the left of the intersection. There are also other ways to access the track, including from the Brooklyn wind turbine.

This stunning walk has a tough start, but it pays off when you reach the top, with views across the Te Kopahou Reserve and the sea beyond. Depending how much time you have on your hands, there are a couple of ways around the tracks. The Tip Track is a fast incline with a rewarding cal burn. For better views and a more remote experience you can swing left onto one of the three tracks that also wind there way around the Reserve. As long as you keep an eye on the distinct white radome, it's hard to get lost - just be prepared for decent walk.
